Cotton Worsted-Weight Basic-Roll Brim Hat
Size: Small with Medium in ( )
Where only one set of numbers or instructions are given, it applies to all sizes
Materials: Cotton Worsted Weight Yarn 1 Skein (3 1/2 oz)
Size 7 or 8 needles 16” circular and one set double point
CAST ON 78 (84) stitches. Place marker on needle and join being careful not to twist stitches. Knit until work measures 7 (7 1/2) inches long
*When you can no longer work comfortably with the circular needle change to double-pointed needles
SHAPE TOP:
- Round 1: *Knit 5, Knit 2 together, repeat from * around (If you don’t end with a K2 together, not to worry, it’ll be ok
in the end result) - Round 2: Knit around
- Round 3: *Knit 4, Knit 2 together, repeat from * around
- Round 4: Knit around
- Round 5: *Knit 3, Knit 2 together, repeat from * around
- Round 6: Knit around
- Round 7: *Knit 2, Knit 2 together, repeat from * around
- Round 8: Knit around
- Round 9: *Knit 1, Knit 2 together, repeat from * around
- Round 10: Knit around
- Round 11: Knit 2 together around
Cut yarn leaving a piece about 12”and thread through the yarn sewing needle. Weave through remaining stitches and secure
Knitted Flower
Note: The committee has a supply of completed knitted flowers available for beginners to have attached to their hats instead of knitting one.
Abbreviations: K=Knit P=Purl st(s)=stitch(es) YO=Yarn over needle tog=together
Materials: Small amount of multi-colored yarn
Straight needles same size as used for basic roll (put stoppers on 2 double-pointed needles with straight needles cast on 47 stitches
- Row 1: P1, *YO, P2 tog. Repeat from * to end
- Row 2: P1, *YO, P2 tog. Repeat from * to end
- Row 3: P1, *YO, P2 tog. Repeat from * to end
- Row 4: Purl Work the following three rows at a firm tension to gather center of flower
- Row 5: *K2 tog. Repeat from * to last stitch, Knit 1
- Row 6: *P3 tog. Repeat from * to end
- Row 7: K3 tog, K2 tog, K3 tog (3sts)
Cut yarn at least 12” long and run through stitches to fasten. Sew short inside seam of flower together. Position the flower on the hat just above the roll brim and sew right through to the hat. You can also sew across the flower in an X-fashion to hold in place.
